Sjögren's Syndrome Support Group
Patients suffering from Sjogren’s syndrome often visit numerous medical specialists for relief of symptoms they do not realize are caused by a single disease. Once diagnosed with Sjogren’s, a rare and debilitating ailment that causes extreme dryness of tissues throughout the body, patients can receive better-coordinated care.
Texas A&M Health Science Center Baylor College of Dentistry hosts the Dallas support group for this autoimmune disease, which most commonly strikes women in their late 40s. HSC-BCD is also home to one of the leading centers for the diagnosis and treatment of Sjogren’s, the Salivary Dysfunction Clinic and Research Laboratory, part of the Stomatology Center in the Department of Periodontics.
Dr. Ibtisam Al-Hashimi, considered the nation’s leading expert on salivary dysfunction, heads the clinic and laboratory. Al-Hashimi is also the impetus behind the Multi-Specialty Referral Center, a cooperative effort by the dental school, Baylor University Medical Center and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, which serves as a clearinghouse for health care providers treating Sjogren’s patients.
