Availability of OMS Faculty as Speakers
The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Pharmacology faculty are well-known in their respective fields and
highly regarded as knowledgeable and highly competent clinicians and researchers. The majority of the OMS/P faculty have extensive experience and are highly sought after for continuing education programs
by local, state, regional, national and international organizations.
They appear in programs as contracted individuals, not as representatives of The Texas A&M University System Health
Science Center. Although the speakers do occasionally share information pro bono, like most professional speakers they generally require an honorarium to compensate them for the extensive
preparation time and time away from their private practices at the College, plus reasonable expenses, coach airfare, and housing costs. There is no fixed or standard honorarium. Honorariums differ from
speaker to speaker and from program to program, and should be discussed with each doctor individually. See the biographies of each faculty member for information on topics the individual doctors speak on.
Baylor OMS/P Faculty are also available for Telehealth broadcasts and other long-distance learning ventures. Baylor is in the
process of setting up a state-of-the-art telehealth broadcasting system, with a fully equipped dental operatory that is equipped with interactive video and audio broadcasting capabilities. For more
information, contact the individual Faculty member or call 214-828-8171.
Most faculty members are also available as educational speakers for programs for lay organizations, on a wide variety of
topics related to dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery, emergency management, pain and anxiety control, and clinical pharmacotherapeutics.
For more information on individual Faculty members, interest areas, and topics they can and have lectured on, go to the Faculty web site.
The Dr. P. Earle Williams Memorial Lectureship
Each year, in mid-January, the Baylor College of Dentistry's Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Pharmacology,
coupled with a corporate sponsor (which for the past 4 years has been Walter Lorenz Surgical Instruments and its North Texas distributor) to host this tuition-free continuing education experience which
was established to honor the memory of Dr. P. Earle Williams (1905-1997). Speakers are selected who are giants in the specialty, known and respected for their clinical knowledge and experience, who have
some past connections with BCD, and who are known to have a sense of humor. These criteria were in keeping with the family of Dr. Williams, who was considered the "Dean" of North Texas oral
surgery. Past speakers have included:
- 1999: Dr. Robert Walker, Dallas, Texas
- 2000: Dr. Myron Tucker, Charlotte, North Carolina
- 2001: Dr. David Frost, Chapel Hill, North Carolina
- 2002: Dr. Stephen Milam, San Antonio, Texas
- 2003: Dr. James Holton, Tyler, Texas
Dr. P. Earle Williams was a 1926 graduate of BCD and was the
first Board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon to establish a practice in Dallas. He set up practice in 1946, following his service in the United States Army. He served in a large number of
leadership positions during his career, including offices in the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American Board of OMS (twice), American College of Dentists and in local and
state component societies of the American Dental Association. He also served on the faculties of two major teaching institutions in Dallas. He enjoyed a national reputation as a medical pioneer, teacher,
public speaker, humorist, amateur magician, and dedicated leader. His favorite saying was "laughter is the shortest distance between two people" and that has become the adopted guiding light of
the Lectureship. The symposium's coordinator is Dr. Roger Alexander, under the oversight of the department Chairman, Dr. Gil Triplett.
The Fifth Symposium will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2003 at the Baylor University Medical Center's Beasley Auditorium. For
information or to be placed on the official mailing list, contact the Division of Pharmacology Secretary at 214-828-8981 and ask to be added to the mailing list, or send a request to ralexander@tambcd.edu and it will be forwarded to the secretary
Dr. Stephen Milam of San Antonio, Texas (left) was the 2002
speaker at the 4th Annual Dr. P. Earle Williams Memorial Lectureship Symposium, talking on the future of TM joint treatment. On the right is Dr. R. Gilbert Triplett, Regents
Professor and Chairman of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Pharmacology.
