Dr.
William "Bill" C. Gaylord - A
Renaissance man – a man of many talents and skills, a natural leader.. are
only a couple of the attributes used by colleagues to describe Baylor College of
Dentistry Alumni Associations 2009 Distinguished Alumnus of the Year, Dr.
William (Bill) C. Gaylord. Dr. Gaylord received his D.D.S. in 1964 from
Baylor College of Dentistry and M.S.D. in Orthodontics in 1966 from the St.
Louis University, College of Dentistry. He then served his country from
1966-1968 as a captain in the USAF, Dental Corps. Dr. Gaylord moved to
Flagstaff, Arizona, where he and his wife, Carole, currently reside and he
maintains a private orthodontics practice. Dr. Gaylord inherited his
dedication to the dental profession and community from his father, Dr. Robert
Gaylord, founder of the graduate department of orthodontics at Baylor College of
Dentistry. Many colleagues supported Dr. Gaylords nomination by
thanking both he and his father for the positive influence and mentoring which
led them to the specialty of orthodontics. He continued to lecture yearly
in the orthodontics department at Baylor until 2007. Dedication to the
dental profession has involved Dr. Gaylord in many associations and
organizations. He has been a member of the American Association of
Orthodontics (AAO) since 1965 and just completed an outstanding year in 2008 as
president. This was a momentous occasion since his father had in previous years
also served as president of the AAO. Dr. Gaylord has also been a member
and served in the American Dental Association, Arizona State Dental Association,
Northern Arizona Dental Society, Rocky Mountain Society of Orthodontists,
Arizona Orthodontic Society and Orthodontic Education and Research Foundation.
Community involvement has included Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce as well as
local educational advisory committees and programs. His love of winter
sports involved him in ski associations, official committees, and the 2002
Winter Olympic Games. Dr. Gaylord has received many professional and civic
honors. In 1971, he was named an honorary member of the Baylor Orthodontic
Alumni Association, 1984 St Louis University Orthodontic Alumni Association
Outstanding Alumni Award, a member of the Pierre Fauchard Academy, Fellow
International College of Dentists, Fellow American College of Dentists, 1996
A.S.D.A. Service Award, and 2008 Orthodontic Education and Research Foundation
Merit Award. In 1987, he received the Arizona Daily Suns
Co-Citizen of the Year, 1985 co-recipient of the Evelyn and Art Masbruch Award
for ski race officiating, and 2005 Halstead Memorial Award for volunteer
services to the sport of skiing in the USSA-RMD. In addition to his
outstanding leadership and people skills on local, statewide and national
levels, one colleague summed up Dr. Gaylords greatest asset is his heart.
He is a lovable, friendly guy who enjoys playing Santa Claus (service above
self) and making everybody smile. The Baylor College of Dentistry
Alumni Associations 2009 Distinguished Alumni Award will be presented to Dr.
Gaylord during the Homecoming Reception at The Adolphus Hotel, January 22, 2010,
5:00-6:30 p.m. All alums, colleagues and friends are welcome to attend.
Dr. Tom
McDougal is the 2008 Distinguished Alumnus Award recipient.
Dr. McDougal is a 1964 graduate of Baylor College of Dentistry, and has
had a very successful career as a restorative dentist, faculty member, lecturer
and banker. Upon graduation
from Baylor College of Dentistry, Dr. McDougal served as a Captain in the U. S.
Air Force and received advanced training in several clinical disciplines.
After his honorable discharge, he opened a private practice in
Richardson, Texas, where he specializes in aesthetic and restorative dentistry.
Tom began lecturing on various topics in dentistry around 1980.
He has presented more than 300 scientific presentations at major national
and international dental meetings and has authored numerous articles in leading
dental publications. He was a
faculty and board member for the Pankey Institute for Advanced Dental Education
for 15 years and is currently a faculty member for the Center for Aesthetic and
Restorative Dentistry. Dr.
McDougal is a past president of the Dallas County Dental Society and the
American Academy of Dental Practice Administration.
He is also a fellow of the International College of Dentists and the
American College of Dentists. He is a founding director of T Bank, which specializes in
business and financial services for dentists.
Tom has received numerous awards from his peers in recognition of his
outstanding contributions to the practice of dentistry. Dr. McDougal was
also honored as Dallas County Dental Society Dentist of the Year in 2004.
He was also nominated by his peers in two categories, Restorative and Cosmetic
and maintains the top position in The Best Of categories in D Magazine for
seven consecutive years. Volunteerism has been a priority throughout
Dr. McDougal’s career. He
has served in the Children’s Oral Health Center for 38 years and provided
dental care to children while on mission trips to Honduras and Brazil.
He is very active in his church and has numerous hobbies, such as
swimming, golf, hunting and motorcycling.
Tom has continually expressed his gratitude for the education he received
at Baylor College of Dentistry, and enjoys giving back to the College that
guided him. He has made the
statement: I have enjoyed my career immensely and I am very thankful to have
had the guidance and training given to me at Baylor.
Some of my most fulfilling moments have come from mentoring and
counseling current Baylor dental students.
From what I have seen of current and past students, I believe this
marvelous profession will be in very capable hands.
He and his wife, Janet, have 3 daughters: Dianne, Mary Beth and Laura.
They also have 2 grandsons: Jordan and Christian.
Dr. McDougal is also supported by his devoted staff members and the many
classmates that have followed his career.
Those comments can be summarized with the following observation by a
noted colleague: Tom, our
classmates and I are very proud of you!
Your contribution to our profession has elevated it in the eyes of your
fellow dentists, the community, and those we seek to serve…our patients.
Your passion, vision, discipline and conscience is inspiring to us all,
and sets an example worthy of following.
As a fellow 1964 classmate, I take pride in the education we received at
Baylor, and to see that you, among others in our class are still actively
contributing to the knowledge, skills, and leadership to keep our profession at
the highest possible level of excellence.

Ms.
Peggy Ann Ward Countryman is the 2008 Distinguished Alumna Award
recipient. Peggy is a 1957
graduate of the Caruth School of Dental Hygiene.
She obtained a bachelors degree from Temple University in Philadelphia
and a masters degree from Columbia University in New York. Peggy credits the supportive influence of Dr. Earl Moore
and Ms. Kay Gandy, an alumna of the dental hygiene special program class of
1957, in advancing her education. Dr.
Earl Moore, BCD graduate, former Alumni Association Board Member and 1999
Distinguished Alumnus nominated Ms. Countryman for this prestigious award, and
spoke on her behalf. Peggy
says she has wonderful memories of a career that has literally taken her
around the world. She has
served as a consultant for the Netherlands’ Ministry of Social Affairs where
she established that country’s first dental hygiene program at the University
of Utrecht. Peggy worked for
the US. Department of Defense to establish a dental assisting program at the
vocational high school in Darmstadt, Germany.
She taught dental hygiene at several academic institutions, including
Temple University, Pensacola Junior College in Pensacola, Florida, and Loyola
University in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Peggy also co-authored a teaching manual now used at various schools.
She was a distinguished speaker at the first International Dental Hygiene
Symposium in Italy and has been a representative at the Symposiums in both
Denmark and Sweden. Her career
includes working for an Irish dentist in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, where she
provided preventive oral care for an entire Sheikh’s family.
She also teamed with a veterinarian in Dubai to care for his thoroughbred
horses. She has received
numerous awards, authored articles, and is a charter member of the ALPHA ETA
Chapter of Sigma Phi Alpha, the National Dental Hygiene Honorary Society.
Peggys ongoing career is continually filled with volunteering and
caring for oncology patients, various animal charities and her beloved church.
She promised God that she would perform at least one good deed a day when
she conquered The Big C 13 years ago and she has not broken that promise.
Peggy has a large support and fan base that includes many family members,
especially her husband, Gary, and her twin sister.
This also includes the wonderful and numerous letters of recommendation
that provided the basis for this award.
Dr.
Brad Crump, a native of East Texas credits his childhood dentist
Dr. Duane Landry in Kilgore for sparking his interest in dentistry when he was
seven years old. It was also
an avid interest in Biology that sealed his fate to become a dentist.
Dr. Crump proceeded to graduate from Kilgore High School and Kilgore
Junior College where he was named Most Representative Male by the student body
and faculty. He then attended
Baylor University, where he graduated in 1993 with a Bachelor of Science in
Biology. In 1993, he began his
studies at Baylor College of Dentistry, where he became interested in
periodontics during his sophomore year.
It was in the department of periodontics that he completed and published
his undergraduate research project, Influence of Three Membrane Types on the
healing of Bone Defects. The international Association for Dental Research where he
was elected to receive a grant to present his research at the 73rd
Session and Exhibition of the IADR in Singapore recognized Dr. Crumps
research. Dr. Crump from BCD
with honors and was inducted into OKU in 1997.
After BCOD, Dr. Crump began his periodontal residency at the University
of Nebraska College of Dentistry in Lincoln, NE under the tutelage of past BCOD
Dean, Dr. Richard Bradley. It
was here with his thesis work, that Dr. Crump developed a new research rodent
model that was published in Journal of Periodontal Research, titled, Effects
of Locally-Delivered Human Macrophage Products and Estrogen on Martine
Inflammatory Bone Resorption. The
University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry faculty awarded Dr.
Crump with its Service Philosophy Award for excellence in patient care and
treatment. Dr. Crump graduated
with honors with a Master of Science and Certificate of Periodontology in 2000.
Dr. Crump became a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology in
2005. Brad remains busy with
his full time periodontal practice in Dallas faculty appointments at BCOD and
University of Nebraska but has not forgotten to give back to his profession.
He remains active in organized dentistry where he is a member of the
Board of Directors of the Southwest Society of Periodontists, Texas Society of
Periodontists, and the Baylor College of Dentistry Alumni Association.
He is also active with the Dallas County Dental Society where he served
on the Board of the Southwest Dental Conference for the past 5 years, membership
development committee chairman 2001-2004, is an alternate delegate to the Texas
Dental Association and serves on the strategic planning committee.
DCDS named Brad New Dentist of the Year in 2004.
Brad is a dedicated athlete and runner, where he has completed numerous
triathlons, duathlons, and his first marathon in 2006.
Dr.
David Struble grew up in Dallas, Texas,
attended the University of Texas, and received his D.D.S. from Baylor
College of Dentistry in 1983. He began practice in Ozark in the spring of
1985 and built his current office in 1989. His professional memberships
include the American Dental Association, the Missouri Dental Association and
in May 2008 he rejoined the board of the Greater Springfield Dental Society.
Dr. David Struble was chosen 2007 Dentist of the Year by the Missouri Dental
Association in recognition for his instrumental role in the establishment of
the Childrens Smile Center, a not for profit clinic to provide dental care
for Medicaid-eligible children. Dr. Struble has completed over a
thousand hours of continued education in dentistry, which has enhanced his
general dentistry practice to include the latest treatments in cosmetic
crown and bridge restorations, cosmetic fillings, porcelain veneers,
endodontics (root canal therapy), T.M.J. (jaw-joint) therapy, patented laser
surgery for correcting gum disease and Full and Partial dentures. His
wife, daughter and son and their interests keep him busy for much of his
free time, but some is still left for golf, running and watching his beloved
Dallas Cowboys and Texas Longhorns. Many people in the Ozarks still refer to
Dr. Struble as "the Singing Dentist" for his "side"
career as a lead performer in Branson, MO shows (Presleys and the Ozarks
Country Jubilee) from 1984-1992. Three times he was awarded "Male
Vocalist of the Year" at the Ozark Music Awards.
Dr.
Scott Waugh was honored by the Oklahoma Dental Association (ODA) with
the ODA Dentist of the Year Award. This award, established by the ODA
House of Delegates, is presented annually to the ODA member dentist recognized
as having made the greatest contribution to the advancement of dentistry in
Oklahoma. The award honors Dr. Waugh for his distinguished leadership
and unwavering service to organized dentistry at the county, state, and
national level. The award was presented by ODA President, Jandra
Mayer-Ward, DDS, Vinita, during the Opening Session of the ODA Annual Meeting
held Friday, April 24, 2009, in Tulsa. Dr. Waugh received his
undergraduate degrees from the University of Central Oklahoma in Chemistry and
Biology before obtaining his Doctor of Dental Surgery from Baylor College of
Dentistry in 1974. President of the ODA 2002-2003, he is also a Past
President of the Oklahoma County Dental Society. He currently serves as
Treasurer of the American College of Dentists and represents the ODA as a
Delegate to the American Dental Association. Dr. Waugh also serves on
the OU College of Dentistrys Admissions Committee, is a Preceptor faculty
member, and is a Dean Robertson Society Life Fellow. He is a member of
the Pierre Fauchard Academy and the International College of Dentists.
He was awarded the ODAs Thomas Jefferson Citizenship Award in 1995.
Dr. Waugh is a Past Chairman of the Board of Elders for Peace Lutheran Church
in Edmond, Past President of St. Marys School Board, was the founder of
Edmonds Community Service Day, and was awarded the Friend of Youth
Award from the City of Edmond in 1989. Before going to dental school,
Dr. Waugh served the US Army in Viet Nam and was awarded the Combat Infantry
Badge, the Silver Star, the Army Accommodation Medal three times, an Air
Combat Medal two times, a National Defense Ribbon, and the Republic of Viet
Nam Service Medal. He and his wife, Sheri, have been married over 36
years and have three children: Scott, Christopher and Maggie. They also
enjoy two grandchildren, with a third due in September. Dr. Waugh
practices dentistry and makes his home in Edmond, Oklahoma.
